Disco Fire

Funk on the Floor 20260327

This Funk on the Floor set is a pretty solid dose of funky nu-disco and disco house. Nearly all these tunes feature strong vocals and infectious grooves. The set started with Fire! and Stand Up (both of which happen to be Da Lukas productions) and then came together pretty quickly. The gospel-tinged opening track, Temptation, fell into that slot almost immediately, as did the closing track, Eat This! (which would probably earn this set an “explicit” tag). The thematic progression from Temptation to Eat This! is not accidental. Overall, I was aiming for a fun, disco party vibe and I think the set delivers.

The cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Little Lies is something I’ve been playing for the past few years. I just love that sax groove. A couple of other standout covers here include Make It Happen (Mariah Carey) and Sex Machine (James Brown). I would guess I have more covers of James Brown tunes than any other artist. Which is probably not too surprising given that he is the father of funk. On the flip side, this might be my first Mariah Carey tune. I’m not super familiar with her catalog so maybe there’s something else in my crate that’s an unrecognized cover, but it’s the first one that I know of.

The transition between the first two tunes isn’t my favorite, but it gets the job done. While I let the songs play long (the set is 45 minutes), when it’s time to bring in the next song, I transition more quickly in this set than I have in the past for Funk on the Floor sets. This was an experiment to see what I thought of faster transitions, and I think I like it better. Of course, it depends on the vibe I’m after and the songs themselves, but it definitely keeps the energy flowing a little more. Especially for listeners who find longer instrumental songs or sections boring (I know… but apparently they exist).

My favorite transition is from Why Did You Do It into Make It Happen (around 22:25). Near the end of Why Did You Do It, I mix in just the vocal from Make It Happen (using stems). Then as we enter the build of Make It Happen I swap the drums. When the build ends, I kill Why Did You It entirely and bring in the instrumentation for Make It Happen to create a more dramatic drop. Let me know what you think.

If you enjoy the music I’m playing, feel free to subscribe so you’ll always know when a new mix drops. My mixes are also available on the Cult of Funk Mixcloud if that’s easier. Also, I’d love it if you share this with your friends who enjoy music. My next shows at Falling Sky are on April 3 (next Friday) and May 8. Would love to see you there.

Until next time, stay funky!
